Chapter Six

The farm group drove in silence for a while, still shell-shocked from their encounter at the gas station. Luke felt like he’d been holding his breath ever since they’d left the house, but he felt even more suffocated now. They’d been so busy worrying about what the rotters were capable of, they hadn’t stopped to think about what other survivors might do to them.

Luke understood why the man at the gas station had been so territorial. They’d have acted exactly the same if it were Ginge’s farm under siege. He was scared, just like the rest of them. He was protecting what little he had left in the world, even if it didn’t technically belong to him. And things were different now. Personal possessions, money, clothes…all the things that seemed to matter before were no longer necessities. Their new currency was food, supplies, water. Anything that could keep them alive for just a little longer. And that meant that breaking into stores and taking whatever they fancied was no longer on the cards. They’d have to be smarter.

“This isn't the right route,” Cassie said as Luke drove straight back toward Ginge’s farm. “We’re going further away from the garden center.”

“That’s because we’re not going there,” Luke said firmly. “Haven’t we had enough close calls for one day?”

“But we didn’t get what we came for,” Heidi argued.

“You got away from the convenience store with some food. You’re lucky you still have your head, too. Those guys could have killed you. Do you understand that?”

“He wouldn’t actually have hurt us,” Heidi said, but Luke could sense the doubt in her tone. “Just because he waved a knife to scare us off, it doesn’t mean he would’ve had the balls to actually use it.”

“Did you really want to test that theory? Shall I turn around and go back, see if he’ll stab you to prove me right?” Luke snapped. Heidi rolled her eyes.

“Obviously it was horrible. Obviously none of us want to go through that again. But everyone is in the same boat. Are you telling me that if someone came to the farm and started rooting for supplies, you wouldn’t act the same? We made a mistake. It’s done now and we learned from it. The garden center could be different.”

“Or it could be exactly the same, or worse. We’ve got what we need for now. Our tank is full. We need to get the car home and only use it again in emergencies.”

“How about a compromise?” Cassie reasoned. “Maybe we don’t go to the garden center today…maybe instead, we stop somewhere on our route back and look for some extra supplies. We’ll be more careful this time, and better prepared. There are five of us, we should be able to handle anything that comes our way.”

Luke huffed out air in frustration. He knew, logically, that Cassie was probably right. They might as well take opportunities while they were already out in the open. But all he wanted was to get everyone back to the house safely.
